Truth is more dangerous than fiction…in this exhilarating upper YA fantasy that will capture fans of Shadow and Bone and Dark Water Daughter

In ancient times, the Elder Wrights breathed their magic into the fabric of the seven seas. Now what was once an ocean of plenty is slowly becoming a sea of death, and the Talin—a race of hidden mages—are beginning to starve.

And for the first time ever, one of their own has no magic.

Ostracized by her own people, Nieve is certain that the old stories hide a missing piece of the puzzle. It’s just a matter of unlocking the secret.

But when a stranger comes sailing into their harbor, Nieve’s world is suddenly blown wide open. Now she’s sailing on the seven seas—with a too-charming, swashbuckling pirate, a group of strange misfits, and a woman who claims to be one of the Elder Wrights.

It’s like Nieve is living one of the stories she’s always loved…only now, she’s weaving a legend of her own.

Except that the old tales don’t mention those journeys that end in tragedy, a king’s calculated interference, or a world poised on the tides of death.

And they certainly don’t mention mutineers with a talent for stealing a girl’s heart…and lying all the while.

Confession: I love X-Men and the idea of people developing different kinds of powers, be they psychic or shapeshifting or elemental control. This is exactly what I got in True Born, and it was so cool.”

More people need to be reading this series – more teens and adults, alike. It’s a series I am absolutely shocked does not come up in every bookish conversation. … L.E. Sterling’s True Born trilogy is going to be a major game changer in not only young adult literature, but also in the science fiction and dystopian genres.”

I really can’t wait to see what this amazing author dreams up next. I remain ever so thankful to the Wattpad readers who were fans of hers long before I ever was, who raved about her incredible story and who, I assume, brought her to the attention of Entangled Teen. It’s one of those things you don’t know you’re missing in your life until you finally have it, you know?”

This was an excellent ya urban fantasy! This was an action packed fantasy read and I adored its unique magic system. I loved Serena’s character and her magic. I enjoyed the interactions between Nolan and Serena as well. This was a wonderful fantasy that I didn’t want to put down and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. If you are looking for a young adult fantasy, you should consider checking this one out!”

“I’m not exaggerating when I say that The Originals could be the Catcher in the Rye of our generation.”

-Hour Magazine

The terror of atomic war, a paranoid arms race, a stark divide between rich and poor in The Originals, L.E. Vollicks debut novel, Reagan-era legacies such as these are seen from the perspective of nightclub subculture and the food bank. Magpie Smith confronts a street-level zeitgeist of fatalism in the early 1990s, bringing to life in the process a dysfunctional family of disenfranchised youth, from Benny, the self-glamorizing drug dealer to Jackson, the overprotective bouncer at the Underground.

When Jackson brutally beats a would-be thief at the club, Magpie must rethink her allegiances. Through a haze of illness, inebriation and LSD, what becomes increasingly clear is that individual interests are beginning to blow the solidarity of the Underground apart. Vexed by the disappearance of her friend and intellectual guide, PK, Magpie tries to hold things together, but is led increasingly to question the fragile foundations of both her own small world and the larger one.

“As far as retellings of ancient myths go, L.E. Sterling’s urban fantasy novel … is an especially imaginative one… told in lucid yet dream-like detail…. Sterling has woven a tale of admirable complexity.”

— Montreal Review of Books, Summer 2013

In present day Montreal, a young woman by the name of Percy vanishes from the streets. The woman’s parents – her father, a famous musician, and her mother, a witch – are frantic. Soon after the woman’s disappearance strange phenomena sweep the globe: snow and ice fall of season in record amounts, blanketing whole countries. World-wide crop failures are announced, droughts become widespread, and then the worst happens: daylight fails to appear…. What follows is the epic tale of Percy’s voyage through the Underworld, whose rules of existence are as unfathomable as the mysterious red flowers that suddenly blanket its fields. As daylight touches the dark realm, Percy unwittingly becomes the permanent guest of the Underworld’s charismatic lord Pluto. And when her best friend Simon, a descendant of a long line of shamans, descends in an effort to save her, the three embark on a life and death race to figure out what – or who – has upset the balance between the two worlds…before it’s too late…. Wonder-filled, imaginative, and compelling, L.E. Sterling’s sophomore novel immerses readers in a magical world where existence itself is ordered by the tenuous balance between light and dark, and the story-filled pages of one remarkable book.
